Last Saturday night, Saturday 18th August 2007, we had a "Youtube Party" in my house. I had the idea a month or two back and put a page on my site for prospective guests to submit URLs for their favourite videos.
My brother Rory and I put together a flash movie that downloaded videos from YouTube on-the-fly and played them in sequence, reading from a customised XML file hosted on my website. By using the Youtube API to extract movie info and aggregating it with data I collected via the party page, the player displayed info about the current video playing, who submitted it, and what the next 3 in the queue were (I thought it might be useful to give a bit of lead time to someone wanted to show off one of their picks to someone who was out of the room - or garden, as it happened to be in this case).
It was nothing too complicated to put together. Just an interesting idea, I thought. So I wondered - has anyone else ever done this? Surely we can't be the first? If anyone's heard of anything like this, please drop me a line.
Anyway, whether we were the first or not, over 240 videos were submitted. The player went without a hitch (except for an occasional stalling when a vid wasn't downloading fast enough) for about 12 hours, and everyone seemed to have a really good time...
Need some work done or a bit of advice on something?
Drop me a line...
