Having specialised in illustration at college, I was pleased to have a go at mixing a bit of digital painting in with some design work I was doing recently. One of the local Musical societies approached me to design the programme for their annual musical production, Anything Goes. With no particular cover idea suggested, I did a few sketches by hand and, once happy with where I was headed, fired up the Corel Painter IX software I purchased a while back.
I based my design to some extent on a famous art-deco poster by Adolphe Cassandre for the famous Normandie Ocean Liner, but wanted a slightly more realistic feel to it, with a pre-dawn setting on the open sea evoking some of the romantic themes outlined in the show.
The software is nice to use with my graphics tablet, and after a bit of experimenting I found I could do what I wanted with the chalk tools. The nice thing about working digitally is that you can work on separate layers and move stuff around once you've drawn. Consequently you can just throw a layer away if you're not happy, and of course there's undo too...
However, I was pretty pleased with this first artistic effort in some time. The tragedy of the whole story however is that the client's budget didn't stretch to a colour cover. Pity.
Need some work done or a bit of advice on something?
